Torque Converter – The Bane of Mechanics
The torque converter is a mechanic’s nightmare.
To repair it, the entire transmission must be removed, because the TC sits between the engine and the gearbox.
Its housing is usually welded shut, so opening it requires cutting, grinding, and welding it back — not every workshop has the tools and experience for that.
Most repairs involve replacing the lock-up clutch friction plates , bearing and seals.
If the pump/turbine blade sealing or fluid pressure is not carefully checked, it’s easy to miss a fault — and the unit could fail again just a few days after reassembly.
