I got the dreaded PO420 and my car wouldn't pass a smog check so it couldn't pass state inspection. I was told I would need to replace both catalytic converters and sensors to the tune of about $5,000. After nearly dying from sticker shock, I began scheming. While attempting to remove the catalytic converters in order to run a replication experiment of Scotty Kilmer's "How to Clean Catalytic Converters [with Laundry Detergent Soap]" YouTube Videos, I discovered the true source of my issue. Please feel free to leave a comment if this post helped you. I post videos like these to help others! Update 1: 13 December 2021; Thousands more miles traveled, still no check engine light! 100% perfect! Update 2: 16 May 2022; Still no light. Still passes all emissions tests. Update 3: 09 October 2025; Final update. Fix still held, the emissions code never returned, and it always passed emissions inspection. Car needed to be taken off road due to extensive rust causing structural and therefore safety concerns. RIP. Catalytic converters still worked flawlessly to its last days with us though!
