The voltage regulator in the alternator had failed and it was putting out so much voltage that the headlight bulbs burned out. The owner had replaced the headlight bulbs and they burned out immediately after changing them. The Alternator Test Function of the Innova 5610 was very helpful in diagnosing and confirming that the alternator was bad. I was able to get the alternator out through the side without having to drop the sway bar, disconnect the transmission lines, the oil pressure sensor, or mess with the lower radiator hose. It's a tight fit, but it can save you some time or hassle if you live in a rusty area. The replacement alternator from O'reilly is working great and I did put new headlight bulbs in for them and they are also working fine. The permanent P0500 code that you saw may be completely unrelated, or may have had something to do with the overvoltage from the alternator. I will take a look at that in the future and will update this description if I find anything. Please note that there are 3 different alternators that fit this truck 100amp, 130amp, and 150amp. It's a good idea to cross reference your original part number, or make sure you look it up by the vin or license plate. They will ask you about a tow package and/or the rear DVD player. This truck needed the 150amp. I was also able to confirm that the new alternator was working great with the Innova 5610 Scan Tool.
