The boot was torn and was leaking grease. Toyota Axles are usually higher quality than the replacements available, so if your existing CV Axle Shaft assembly ( bearings, cage and shaft) are not damaged, you can re-boot and grease your existing cv axle. This one had already been replaced with an aftermarket axle assembly, so I just replaced it again with an axle assembly that I picked up from our local O'reilly Auto Parts Store. So far it's working great and no vibrations or anything. *I know that this one came out easily and we got really lucky. The outside shaft wasn't stuck in the splines in the hub/bearing. And the carrier bearing just slid right out of the bracket/housing. I did soak them with PB B'laster only a couple hours before starting this job, but as you can see, I am not in the rust belt. I have heard of many people having success with an air hammer on the outside of the carrier bearing which after a while just 'walks the axle out'. I would recommend spraying it heavily a couple days before doing this job if you do live in a rusty area and have the time to plan ahead. Best of luck to you all. The Torque Specs I found online: 24 ft. lbs for the impingement bolt on the carrier bearing housing 68 ft lbs for the ball joint nuts and bolt 217 ft lbs for the axle nut Tools needed: PB B'laster or similar penetrating oil Large Pry Bars Long Needle Nose Pliers and/or Channel Lock Pliers 14mm socket 17mm socket 18mm socket 21mm Socket for lug nuts 30mm 12-point Socket if the axle has the original OEM style Axle nut (Ours was a 6-point 32mm, and so was the new replacement) 3/8" ratchet or impact wrench 1/2" Impact wrench or breaker bar Torque Wrenches Punch and Hammer to stake the flange nut Thanks for watching!
