How a hybrid engine starts then turns into a generator

Without a starter and without an alternator, how does a hybrid engine start? Using the ConsuLab EM-200-29, we demonstrate how the electric motor (MG1) works as the starter in a Toyota Prius hybrid system. Then that motor switches over to become a generator after it starts. This is perfectly demonstrated in this video on the hybrid planetary gearset trainer.
