How To Change The Transmission Fluid & Filter On 4th Gen Toyota Rav4

Learn how to change the automatic transmission fluid and filter on a 4th generation Toyota Rav4 using these step by step instructions. Remember to NEVER flush the transmission fluid and only drain and refill the fluid that you’ve taken out. Make sure car is not hot and has been cooled long before doing procedure. 2. Jack up the front of the car and place jack stands under car. 3. Jack up rear of the car and place jack stands under car - fully level after lifted. 4. Take off the driver’s side tire with 21 mm socket 5. Remove front plastic cover that hides the fill plug and take off two plastic clips on top and two on the bottom 6. Remove filler plug and washer with 24mm socket using breaker bar 7. Use regular wrench w/ 6mm allen socket to open the drain plug and drain out all the fluid into pan *If no fluid comes out, add more fluid. Close the plug and fill in more fluid with engine turned off. Turn engine on, shift gears until temp is up again. Open plug and then continue regular procedure. 8. Once fluid has drained and is dripping use 6mm allen wrench and loosen the green plastic filler and remainder of transmission fluid will drain out. 9. Reinstall plastic filler (hand tight) and drain plug (don’t torque) 10. Remove transmission pan with normal wrench, 10mm socket and extension (see if I can do w/ impact wrench) leave last two bolts loosely on so I can have hand on pan before taking down and tilt to one side for draining into measuring bucket. 11. Remove the two 10mm bolts that hold transmission filter (more fluid will drain) 12. Reinstall new filter w/ new gasket (rub fluid around gasket) and reattach two 10mm bolts (torque to 67 inch pounds or 5.583 ft lbs of torque) 13. Clean contact points around the metal housing where pan goes with rag. 14. Remove old gasket from pan. 15. Wipe out any remaining fluid from pan and then spray brake cleaner into pan to help remove any excess. 16. Clean the 4 magnets that are attached to bottom of pan and then reattach to pan. 17. Install new gasket onto pan. 18. Reattached pan with new gasket back onto car with all the 10mm bolts, loosely tighten by hand and then torque all of them to 67 inch pounds or 5.583 ft lbs of torque. Double check all bolts again with torque. 19. Check the amount of old fluid drained out from everywhere in bucket. 20. Use the fluid pump and pump in what you measured in bucket with another 1.5/qt of new fluid and place filler plug back on. 21. Turn on car and with foot on the break shift into all the gears with each gear engaged for at least a second. 22. Once gears have been cycled place car back into park while still on and check the pan below with temp gun pointed at lined part of pan (Back of pan) *Once pan has reached 107-108 degrees (usually only takes a minute or two in order to reach this temperature) open drain plug. Transmission fluid expands as it gets hot and shrinks as it gets cold. 23. Open drain plug with wrench, 6mm socket, and drain out fluid into oil pan. *Right before it trickles out close back drain plug and tighten to 35 ft lbs torque with washer *If I pull the drain plug and no fluid comes out, the correct amount of fluid wasn’t added and the procedure needs to restart 24. Torque filler plug back to 29 ft lbs torque with washer. 25. Replace plastic cover with 4 plastic clips. 26. Reattach wheels and tighten to 76 ft lbs torque. *** always remember that it’s better to overfill than underfill ***
