Plant your leggy tomatoes sideways! 🍅 #gardeningtips

Tried this method on my tall and leggy tomato seedlings for the first time last yr, and I was quite pleased with the results. I couldn’t plant them as deeply as I wanted to bec my beds weren’t deep enough, so I thought I’d try a different planting technique and see how well they would do. Gardening is a lot more fun when you experiment after all. 🥳 You can learn so many methods and techniques from books and social medias, but the best lessons you could ever learn from are the ones that come straight from your own garden. 🪴👩🏻‍🌾 Here are the instructions on how I planted my tomato seedlings sideways: 1️⃣ Dig a hole as deep as you can, and plant the tomato sideways like shown in the reel. 2️⃣ Bend the main stem upwards (very carefull not to break it), and after adding your fertilizer and other mix you like to add in the planting hole, cover it with dirt (I found it easier to cover the back of where the stem is bent first so you can easily stabilize it without breaking it). 3️⃣ The main stem should be pointed upwards and it should look like a normal newly transplanted seedling should look. Remove all bottom leaves, mulch, water thoroughly, and add support. 🍅Why plant it this way? Since tomato plants have the ability to sprout additional roots along the buried stem, you’ll want to plant your tomatoes deeply (about 2/3 of the plant should be buried). Sometimes they can grow tall and leggy when they don’t receive enough light, and since I couldn’t plant this seedling any deeper than I wanted to, I decided to plant it sideways so it can develop better vertical roots.
